Description

An RYA Yachtmaster Coastal / Offshore (Sail) Certificate of Competence signifies that a skipper is competent on a yacht to make passages up to 150nm from harbour (20nm for Coastal). The Yachtmaster can be taken under sail or power, there are two different preparation courses and exams.

The Yachtmaster Coastal/Offshore is obtained by examination which involves exercises, challenges and tasks from any part of the syllabus to demonstrate the ability and confidence of the skipper.

Conditions and requirements

Pre-requisites before the exam: Certification required is a GMDSS Short Range Certificate (SRC) or higher grade of marine radio certificate. A valid first aid certificate.

Minimum age: 17

Yachtmaster™ Coastal exam pre-requisites:

Minimum seatime: 30 days aboard, 2 days as skipper, 800 miles logged within the past 10 years (400 miles logged outside of the Mediterranean, Baltic Sea, Lakes, etc.), 12 night hours of navigation.

*If you hold the Coastal Skipper course certificate this is reduced to 20 days, 2 days as skipper, 400 miles, 12 night hours.

Yachtmaster™ Offshore exam pre-requisites:

Minimum age: 18

Minimum seatime: 50 days aboard, 5 days experience as skipper., Yachtmaster Theory, 2,500 miles logged (1250 of the miles outside of the Mediterranean, Baltic Sea, Lakes, etc.), 5 passages over 60 miles including 2 overnight and 2 days as skipper.

Duration: 5 days preparation covering all skills, followed by the exam which takes 6 hours per candidate 1-3 extra days.

The price not included 100€ for food and examiner fees.

Syllabus

During the week the instructor will asses your strengths and weaknesses and coach you in
the areas required to pass the examination. The candidate must show a wide knowledge
and experience in the following areas:

Passage planning
Man overboard recovery
Close quarters handling
Skippering techniques
Navigation in restricted visibility
Pilotage and knowledge
International Rules for Preventing Collision at Sea.

The exam will include an assessment of your skippering skills, boat handling, general seamanship, navigation, safety awareness and knowledge of the IRPCS, meteorology and signals.
