Description

A practical course for aspiring motorboat skippers with previous boating experience and a good understanding of basic navigation theory.

You will learn how to plan passages, handle a motor yacht safely in a variety of situations, and manage navigation using both traditional and electronic methods.

The course is ideal if you want to gain the confidence to take charge of a motor yacht during the day in coastal waters. It is designed for anyone looking to skipper a power-driven vessel over 10 metres in familiar conditions.

This course also develops your ability to use onboard equipment like radar, chartplotters, and VHF, while giving you hands-on experience leading the crew and making real-time decisions at sea.

Pre-course experience: 5 days at sea, 100 miles, 4 night hours on a motor yacht

Conditions and requirements

Course content:
Preparation for sea, boat handling in close quarters, navigation and passage planning, pilotage in harbours and marinas, weather interpretation, collision regulations, engine checks and maintenance, fuel management, provisioning, safety procedures and emergency drills, operating radar and other electronics, practical motor cruising by day and night.

Certificate:
There is no formal exam. The instructor continuously assesses your skills throughout the course. If your performance meets the required standard, you will be awarded the RYA Day Skipper Motor certificate.

A solid understanding of navigation theory is essential. It is strongly recommended to complete the RYA Day Skipper Theory course before attending the practical motor course.
